NUTC & CMAP #2050BigIdeas Forum: Have we reached peak driving?

Have we reached peak driving?

Planning for future travel in the Chicago region

WHAT: CMAP’s ON TO 2050 #BigIdeas Forum hosted by NUTC

WHEN: Thursday, September 22, 2016 | 1:30PM - 3:00PM

WHERE: McCormick Foundation Center | 1870 Campus Drive Evanston IL 60208

On Thursday, September 22nd, the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning (CMAP) and Northwestern University Transportation Center (NUTC) hosted the ON TO 2050 Big Ideas Forum on “peak driving.” Experts speaking on the CMAP study and a plan for the future of technology said it’s unclear if we've reached “peak driving” or the end of the driving boom. But one thing is clear: technology is shifting the way we get around.

The emergence of ridesharing, self-driving car technology, and transportation apps must all be considered when planning for our transportation networks’ future. This could include “gamification” of transportation, in which commuters are rewarded for taking public transit or a less-traveled route.

ABOUT ON TO 2050

Now in development, ON TO 2050 will be the next comprehensive plan for metropolitan Chicago. Our region has changed in significant ways since the new plan's predecessor, GO TO 2040, was adopted unanimously in 2010 by leaders from across the seven counties. Collaborative efforts at the local, state, and federal levels have helped to implement GO TO 2040 recommendations, yet difficult realities persist even as new challenges continue to emerge.

CMAP and its partners are beginning a series of ON TO 2050 Big Ideas Forums to engender debate about topics -- Climate, Economy, Government, Housing, Land Use & Development, Natural Resources, Transportation, and more -- that will shape the region's future. Participants will influence the policy emphases of this vitally important plan as it proceeds toward adoption in October 2018.
